- Mr. George Williams started The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in London, in 1844. Today it is a global movement of 30 million people spread over 122 countries, with its world headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
- It is an association open to all, regardless of race or creed, with a glorious heritage of service to the community and its people.
- The first YMCA in India was started in Calcutta, in 1857. Today there are about 550 YMCAs with over 500,000 members in the country.
- J. Naismith, a student of the Springfield YMCA College, USA, invented basketball in 1891.
- G. Morgan, a YMCA member, invented volleyball in 1895.
- Henri Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, was an early YMCA member.
- YMCA was the first to start Night Schools for working young men.
- YMCA developed rural centres as early as 1918.
- YMCA has one of the finest Physical Education colleges in Asia at Chennai (Madras).
